Octreotide Acetate
Octreotide acetate is used to treat acromegaly, severe watery diarrhea, and unexpected facial and neck redness brought on by specific tumor types for example carcinoid tumors, vasoactive intestinal peptide tumors which commonly found in the intestines and pancreas.
This compound, which is 45 times more potent than somatostatin, is a synthetic derivative of the somatostatin hormone. Additionally, it results in the inhibition of serotonin release, as well as the inhibition of gastrin, VIP, insulin, glucagon, secretin, motilin, and pancreatic polypeptide secretion.
In acromegaly, this medication causes growth hormone and IGF1 levels to drop. Compared to endogenous somatostatin, octreotide has greater inhibitory effects on growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin. Further, it causes the secretion of LH and FSH to decline, as well as the blood supply to the spleen.
